The Steep Hill

"True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future."
— Seneca

Steve and Kynthos at the bottom of a hill

Grandfather had asked the boys to fetch water from the well.

Steve carried a very heavy clay jug, while little Kynthos carried a small one. Now, they stood at the bottom of a very long, steep dirt path leading back home.

Steve sitting on the ground exhausted

Halfway up, Steve dropped his jug with a thud.

"It's too far! I can't do it!" he complained, looking all the way up to the top of the very long hill. His arms ached.

Grandfather pointing at Steve's feet

Grandfather walked up beside him and pointed down at Steve's dusty sandals.

"Can you take just one more step?" Grandfather asked.

"Yes," Steve muttered.

Steve's foot taking a step

"Then only carry the step you are on," Grandfather said gently.

"Do not try to carry the whole hill at once."

Steve focusing on the ground as he walks

Steve picked up the jug. This time, he bowed his head and stopped looking at the top of the hill.

He focused only on the dirt right in front of him, taking it one step at a time, until he suddenly realized he was already home.

Steve writing on his wax tablet
That evening, Steve wrote on his wax tablet:

I cannot carry the whole hill.

I can only take one step.

Focus & Mindfulness (Prosoche)
When a task feels too big, do not look at the finish line. Look only at the next step right in front of you.
