A peaceful olive grove under the afternoon sun. Grandfather handed Steve and Kynthos two woven baskets and pointed toward the many fallen olives beneath several ancient olive trees.
The boys eagerly began gathering olives while Grandfather smiled with quiet confidence before walking away to do his own work.
Steve and Kynthos worked diligently, carefully filling their baskets with fallen olives. Steve gathered methodically while Kynthos happily worked beside him.
Their baskets were beginning to fill. Everything felt productive and peaceful.
Suddenly, Milo the monkey appeared among the olive branches. He performed playful backflips, swung from vines by his tail, balanced on a low branch, and juggled small stones with exaggerated expressions.
The boys paused and looked up with delight. Their baskets sat forgotten beside them.
Time passed. Kynthos laughed uncontrollably while clapping for Milo. Steve, who had been working carefully, now threw a small stick for the monkey and laughed as well.
The olive baskets remained nearly untouched while sunlight began stretching into long afternoon shadows. The distraction had completely stolen their attention.
The sun hung low near the horizon. Milo had wandered off to nap high in an olive tree. Steve and Kynthos suddenly noticed their nearly empty baskets. Around them, countless olives still covered the ground.
Their joyful expressions turned to quiet realization as they understood how much time had slipped away.
Grandfather returned carrying his own basket, now completely full. He calmly looked at the boys' nearly empty baskets and then at the setting sun.
Grandfather knelt beside the boys with a gentle smile. In the background, Milo slept peacefully on a tree branch, no longer demanding attention.
"Life will always offer you a dancing monkey,"
Grandfather explained gently.
"There is a time for play, and there is a time for duty. A wise person enjoys both—but never lets one steal the other."
The last rays of sunlight shone through the olive grove. Steve and Kynthos worked with renewed determination, gathering olives quickly and carefully together.
Their baskets steadily filled while Milo continued sleeping peacefully in the tree, no longer distracting them.
