Kynthos stood on his tiptoes. On the merchant's table was the most beautiful carved wooden horse he had ever seen.
It had a flowing mane and looked powerful.
He reached into his tunic and pulled out his small leather coin purse. He opened it carefully.
It was completely empty.
"I have nothing," Kynthos said, his voice trembling.
He walked away from the table and sat in the dirt, crossing his arms.
"It's not fair. I don't have anything at all."
Grandfather knelt down beside him. He didn't look at the toy horse. Instead, he pointed up at the bright, warm sky.
"Do you feel the sun on your face?" Grandfather asked.
Kynthos nodded slowly.
"And the strong legs that carried you all the way to this market?"
Kynthos looked down at his dusty sandals and nodded again.
Grandfather pointed at Steve who was smiling back at him.
"And do you see your brother, who loves you?"
Grandfather stood up and offered his hand.
"Your purse is empty, little one. But you are very wealthy."
Kynthos thought for a moment. He stood up, dusted off his tunic, and ran to grab his brother's hand.
