Steve and Kynthos were walking toward the river when they found a huge rock blocking the narrow garden path.
The rock was right in the middle of the road, and they couldn't just leave it there to be someone else's problem.
"I'll move it," Steve declared.
He planted his feet and pushed with all his strength.
The rock didn't move.
Not even a little.
Steve stepped away, breathing hard.
"This ruined everything," he sighed. "We'll never reach the river."
Kynthos stared quietly at Steve, wishing he knew how to help.
Grandfather walked over from beneath the olive tree and handed Steve a cool cup of water.
"The rock hasn't ruined your day," he said with a smile.
"It has brought you a lesson."
"A lesson?" Steve asked.
Grandfather nodded.
"Every time you struggled against that stone, your body became a little stronger. Obstacles don't only test us—they train us."
Steve looked at his arms with new eyes.
Maybe the rock hadn't been his enemy after all.
Steve searched the garden and found a sturdy branch.
Together he and Kynthos slid it beneath the rock.
"Ready?"
They pushed together.
The branch lifted the stone just enough.
Slowly...
Then suddenly...
The rock rolled aside.
The path was clear.
