1976-03-01 - Guam Arrival
Date: postmarked Agana, Guam, 1 March 1976
[Page 1 — image 0001] Hafa Mom & Dad I arrived in Guam at 4 am this morning. The arrangement — they going to keep me in Agana instead of moving me to Agot cause I'll be staying there only a week anyway. I guess it's what I'm suppose to do. It was a long 8 hour flight. No movie or radio on the plane. They feed us something but it wasn't too good. And I was seen off by a dozen and a half of friends. It was sure hard to go when ya know ya have that many friends that care enough about ya to stay up and see ya off at the airport. They got me some leis and a couple of other going away gift as stationary. So I have no excuse to write them. I really do love the Hawaiian people and I hope I soon feel the same way about the Chamorro [margin: Guamanian] people. I'm sitting in the laundry mat writing this letter to describe this place well — I think "jungle" is the word. This place is a tropical jungle. I've only seen a little bit but I think I'm going to like this place. The elders over here sound really cool. They made a switch already on the plane and I have to go along with it. I wanted to go to Agot but they said that the other elder should have more time to remember the area, so that's final. The island seems very civilized to me. It's not what I thought it would be. But I shouldn't draw
[Page 2 — image 0002] my conclusion until I've been here for awhile. Did ya get my package? I hope so. Ya told me to write and tell ya the news and I did another thing — the humidity is very high over here. When I first walked out of the plane — wow — the air feel real heavy and it was a little funny to breathe the thick air. But as they say I'll get used to it. Just like how hot it is here. It's real hot but I'll get used to it. And when I came thru the baggage line they open my bag to search it. And they couldn't get them shut again. They go thru every little bit of article ya got. Flip the pages in my book, the whole bit. Well I got to run. Remember send me a letter. Okay.
I Love you, yours always, Love Steve
