If You're Not Learning From the Person You're Teaching

Real authority is bidirectional. The teacher who stops receiving stops growing — and eventually starts teaching an outdated version of what they once knew.

The expert in the room.

Credentials, experience, history. The person everyone came to learn from. Now ask: when did they last change their mind because of something someone in that room said?

If the answer is never — or not recently — the teaching has calcified. What was once earned knowledge has become performed certainty. And performed certainty does not teach. It recites.

One-Way Authority Has a Shelf Life

One-directional authority feels efficient in the short term. The expert speaks, the learner receives. Clean. Unambiguous. Nothing is complicated by the student's perspective interfering with the lesson.

It also stops growing. The teacher who stops receiving — who is no longer genuinely curious about what the person in front of them thinks, struggles with, or sees differently — is teaching an increasingly outdated version of what they once knew. Their certainty was earned. It has since become a habit. The habit is comfortable and it is slowly making them irrelevant.

This is not about expertise. The student is not secretly as experienced as the teacher. The principle here is something different: genuine attention to another person's reality always reveals something about yours.

What Students Teach

Their confusion exposes your assumptions.

When a student does not understand something you thought was obvious, that is information — not about the student's inadequacy, but about the places where your model assumed shared context that does not exist. The thing you stopped questioning because it became automatic. The assumption you stopped seeing because it became invisible.

Their questions surface what you have stopped questioning. The question that sounds naïve often contains a challenge to a premise you had not realized you were holding.

Their resistance shows you where your model has gaps. The pushback that initially feels like failure to understand is sometimes the accurate perception that something in the framework does not cohere.

None of this is comfortable. All of it is useful.

Humility Is Accuracy, Not Modesty

The humility required here is not self-deprecation. It is not pretending the expertise is equal or that the teacher has nothing to offer.

It is the accurate recognition that the picture is never complete, that experience accrues assumptions alongside knowledge, and that the person who knows they might be wrong is more likely to be right over time than the person who knows they are right.

Healthy authority increases agency in others rather than replacing it. It creates people who can eventually operate without the teacher — who have internalized something, not just received it. That outcome requires the teacher to be genuinely invested in the student's growth rather than in the performance of their own expertise.

The Bidirectional Current

The best teaching relationships produce something in both directions. Not because the student is secretly as knowledgeable as the teacher. But because knowledge shared across a genuine relational gap always reveals something in the transmission.

The teacher who learns nothing from their students is not demonstrating mastery. They are demonstrating a closed loop. And closed loops do not generate new understanding. They only recirculate what was already there.

Live your truth and help others live theirs more fully. That is not a soft principle. It is the actual architecture of real teaching — one that requires the teacher to be, at least in some sense, still becoming.

The moment you stop being a student, you stop being a real teacher. The two are not opposites. They are the same posture, aimed in different directions at the same time.
